How
do I know I am using the correct cuff size with my Omron
Blood Pressure Monitor?
We highly recommend, regardless of your weight, height
or physical body condition, you measure your arm circumference.
If your arm size is 7 to 9 inches you need the small
adult cuff, 9 to 13 inches is the standard size adult
cuff, and 13 to 17 inches is the large adult cuff. Each
model is approved for use with specified cuff sizes.
When the wrong cuff size is used you may get an inaccurate
reading at your first measurement, or after a short
period of use because the cuff bladder is damaged. |

Is
there any difference in blood pressure values between
wrist and brachial measurement?
Wrist and brachial blood
pressure values of those suffering from disease
If the position of your wrist is not at the level of
your heart, the blood pressure values change due to
the weight of the blood itself. The blood pressure values
drop when the wrist is positioned higher than the level
of your heart. On the other hand, when the wrist is
lowered, the blood pressure values increase. (A variation
of approximately 8 mmHg is observed with height difference
of 10 cm.) Brachial and wrist blood pressures usually
do not show great differences before and after eating
or
drinking. If you take a hot bath, the dermal vessels
contract temporarily and blood pressure elevates. However,
if you take a warm bath for relaxing, peripheral vessels
expand and blood pressure lowers. Wrist blood pressure
tends to drop more than brachial blood pressure for
the latter. |

Why
is blood pressure management important?
A daily record of your highest and lowest blood pressure
with associated mental, physical, and environmental
conditions greatly assists your doctor in the diagnosis
of your health. It is recommended that you measure your
blood pressure daily at home and record it along with
the weather conditions, events, concerns, or medicines
(depressants, etc.), or any other information that may
help in the diagnosis. |

How
can I know the difference between blood pressure values
measured at the wrist and upper arm?
Measure your blood pressure by wrapping a brachial blood
pressure monitor on your right arm and the wrist blood
pressure monitor on your left wrist simultaneously (refer
to the figure). After several measurements, you should
be able to know the difference. If the blood pressure
values measured on your right and left arms differ greatly,
it is necessary to know the tendency of your blood pressures
to differ by measuring several times, alternating the
arm with the blood pressure monitor. |

How do I measure my arm circumference?
It’s easy to determine your correct cuff size
by measuring the circumference of your left arm with
a cloth tape measure. Place the tape measure in the
middle of your upper arm between your elbow and your
shoulder. If your arm size is 7 to 9 inches you need
the small adult cuff, 9 to 13 inches is the standard
size adult cuff, and 13 to 17 inches is the large adult
cuff. Each model is approved for use with specified
cuff sizes. |

How
do you correctly apply the arm cuff?
First you will need to remove any tight-fitting clothing
from your left arm. Now you are ready to put your left
arm through the cuff loop. The bottom of the cuff should
be about one-half inch above your elbow. Turn your arm
so your palm is facing up. Adjust the cuff around your
arm so that the tubing runs down the center of your
arm. Secure the cuff so it stays in place. You should
be able to fit one finger between the cuff and your
arm. This space is very important. If you wrap the cuff
too loose or too tight you may get an inaccurate reading.
